Bicycle Safety

Question 1 of 3

Bicycle Safety DKT Practice

You are driving on a road with a speed limit of 60km/h or less. How much space must you leave when passing a bicycle rider?

Minimum Passing Distance Laws

In New South Wales, drivers must keep a safe distance when overtaking cyclists at all times. The required minimum distance changes according to the speed zone:

Speed Limit Minimum Passing Distance
60 km/h or less 1 metre
Over 60 km/h 1.5 metres

Note: You are allowed to cross unbroken and double lines to safely pass a cyclist, provided it is safe and clear to do so.

Sharing the Road Safely with Cyclists

Cyclists are more vulnerable and require extra consideration to ensure their safety. They have the same rights and responsibilities as any other road users, so when sharing the road:

  • Be patient and wait until it's safe to overtake.
  • Check your mirrors and blind spots for cyclists before turning or changing lanes.
  • Use your indicators to signal intentions well in advance.
  • Avoid using your horn unnecessarily, as it can startle cyclists.

Reporting Unsafe Passing Incidents

If you are witness to a vehicle passing a cyclist too closely:

  1. Note the vehicle's registration number, make, model, and colour.
  2. Record the date, time, and location of the incident.
  3. Where possible, gather video evidence or witness statements.
  4. Report the incident to the local police station or call the Police Assistance Line at 131 444.
